When we think of Cleopatra, we think of a queen. But not just an Egyptian queen, but an eternal icon who knew that style could be as powerful a weapon as intelligence.

The historian Plutarch tells us that when he appeared before Julius Caesar, he did not do so walking or following formality. He had himself rolled up in a Persian carpet —or a linen sack, according to other sources—and appeared unrolled at the feet of the Roman emperor .
